Prime Minister Mark Carney is weighing in after new information was revealed on the guns used in the Tumbler Ridge mass shooting.
That came out after Discord messages between shooter Jesse Van Rootselaar and an alleged US co-conspirator came to light.
One of the guns referenced in the messages with James Bryant was a modified semi-automatic SKS rifle.
RCMP had previously seized the gun, but returned it to Van Rootselaar.
That is despite the fact that she had been institutionized twice prior to that, with psychiatrists deeming her a danger to herself and others.
Despite months of pressure, RCMP are still declining to comment on the guns as details not revealed in the messages are under a publication ban.
They say the joint-work with the FBI on Bryant was one example of why they were keeping the info sealed.
Now those same advocacy groups want the SKS rifle banned.
But Carney says he’ll wait for advice from an on-going review of firearms classifications by an independent panel.
He says the constant changes to firearms require thie r input before a decision can be made.
