Earlier this week, the Senate heard testimonies on a proposed Bill which would force RCMP to enforce First Nations laws on their land.
Bill S-223 would amend the RCMP Act to officially recognize that duty.
It would cover laws made under the Indian Act, the First Nations Land Management Act, or by Nations under self-governing agreements.
Supporters say RCMP had better enforced First Nations laws prior to 2014.
While RCMP Chief Superintendent Simon Pillay acknowledges that, he says it’s not due to any policy change.
He says it stems instead from confusion over police responsibilities.
Some witnesses said they don’t want to give RCMP more power in their communities.
But others say it only puts a responsibility they already have in writing.
The Bill is currently being considered for third reading.
