In a rare show of unity, the federal Conservatives and Bloc Quebecois supported an NDP bill to amend the Labour Code yesterday, but it was still defeated.
Bill C-247 had sought to eliminate Section 107 of the Labour Code.
It gives the labour minister sweeping powers to force through back to work legislation without a House of Commons vote.
Skeena MP Ellis Ross, who voted for the Bill, says the Liberals have exploited it numerous times to intervene in labour disputes since 2022.
Prince Rupert’s division of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union had called it an undemocratic attack on workers’ rights to strike.
They had issued a statement opposing the Building Canada Strong Act, partially because it further cements section 107.
The NDP Bill was ultimately voted down by the Liberals.
