Some quick thinking helped an elderly couple avoid a phone scam.
On January 27, New Hazelton RCMP were advised of a fraud that happened early to an elderly couple in the area.
The couple had received a call from someone claiming to be a police officer who stated that the couple’s grandson had been arrested and in order to release him a large sum of money was needed for bail.
The couple did withdraw money from their account out of concern for their grandson. However, before following through with the directions provided by the scammer, the couple thought to call and check on their grandson. When they discovered he was safe and sound at home the police were notified of the scam.
Sgt. Darren Durnin said in a press release, “The RCMP do not seek out monetary payment from anyone.”
If you should find yourself a recipient of a similar phone call you are asked to immediately report it to the police. People are also reminded to never send the caller money.
