Over the next month, the Council of the Haida Nation will be working with local trapping crews to implement their European Green Crab response program.
European Green Crabs are an invasive species in the region, and are a threat to local ecosystems.
Traps will be deployed in multiple areas, including intertidal and shallow subtidal areas around Massett Harbour, marked by buoys.
The Council does not expect any impacts to vessel or float plane traffic.
But they are asking for take extra caution and to ensure all gear and vessels are thoroughly cleaned and inspected.
The crabs are similar in length and width, with five points on either side of the front shell, and aren’t always green.
You can report suspected sightings by email to invasives@haidanation.com.
