The Bulkley Valley is gearing up for a full day of river fun this Sunday, September 29, as Rivers Day returns with a community float and celebration.
The event begins at 9 a.m. at the Quick Bridge, with a self-guided float down the Bulkley River to Telkwa. The float is not a guided trip, so paddlers are responsible for their own safety and transportation. Life jackets are required, and participants should have some paddling experience or join someone who does. Less experienced boaters are encouraged to exit above the Telkwa Bridge to avoid a short rapid.
From 12 to 3 p.m., the festivities move to Eddy Park in Telkwa for a wild salmon barbecue, thanks to Wet’suwet’en Fisheries. Avril Jack will be preparing the meal, with additional food donations from Healthy Hugs Organics, Rustica Woodfired Bakery, and the Witset Community Garden.
Live music by Ezra Beaton, river trivia, and great prizes from local sponsors will round out the afternoon.
This year’s event is held in memory of Roger McColm, a dedicated Rivers Day volunteer.
Hosted by SkeenaWild Conservation Trust and What Matters in Our Valley, Rivers Day goes ahead rain or shine—so bring a chair, your raincoat, and a love for rivers.
