The B.C. government is eliminating the consumer carbon tax, effective April 1, 2025, by introducing legislation to reduce the tax rate to $0. Premier David Eby emphasized that while British Columbians are committed to reducing emissions, the carbon tax had become divisive and a financial burden. The move will cut fuel costs by about 17 cents per litre and natural gas home heating bills by 15 cents per cubic metre.
The cancellation also ends the climate action tax credit, with the final payment to be made in April 2025. This shift is expected to impact the province’s budget by $1.99 billion, but the government plans to offset this through a new carbon pricing system targeting big polluters. The province will continue to support clean energy initiatives like heat pump rebates and energy efficiency upgrades to help lower emissions and energy costs.
