Conservation officers have located a second victim of a fatal bear attack near Bella Coola from earlier this week.
48 year-old Jennifer Balcarras and her daughter, 20 year-old Selah Reed, were reported missing after heading out for a walk on Sunday.
On Monday afternoon, officers discovered Balcarras’s remains on the Snooka West Trail, about five minutes from her home.
They had launched extensive search efforts for Reed, but sadly, she was also located deceased yesterday evening.
Evidence shows both had been attacked by a grizzly bear, but it’s unclear if more than one was involved.
None have been captured so far, but trapping efforts are underway.
Any they do catch will be assessed and euthanized if deemed responsible.
School District 49 has cancelled classes at all schools in the valley today.
Classes will resume tomorrow morning, but students will be let out early, with supports available for both students and staff.
Reed was an education assistant.
The Nuxalk Nation is recommending an 8 PM curfew for all youth, but they aren’t enforcing it.
They’re also recommending no one head outdoors alone right now, and are offering shuttle transportation from 8 am to 8 pm daily.

They’ll be holding a healing drumming circle at the Acwsalcta school gym today.
