A federal Conservative Bill to overturn the North Coast Oil Tanker ban is likely to fail in the House of Commons today.
It’s up for third reading, with opposition renewing their push to rescind it after the landslide provincial Conservative election win.
But, when asked about it, Premier-elect Lorne Doerkson did not offer support for that movement.
He says, for now, his government will be focused on the project in front of them: the southern-oriented Pacific Link pipeline.
Doerkson says BC doesn’t have to chose between building our economy and protecting the coast, he plans to do both.
Federal leader Pierre Poilievre was one of several members of his caucus to sign a letter urging Liberals to vote to overturn it.
He says it’s the only thing blocking a Strathcona Resources proposal to ship 250,000 barrels of oil to the Port of Prince Rupert daily via rail.
Maintaining the ban was a key part of a deal inked with the NDP government this summer.
