As they get set for next week’s historic First Nations-First Ministers meeting, the Assembly of First Nations has declared Sunday a day of ceremony.
Chiefs from coast-to-coast will be meeting with all the Premiers and Prime Minister next Monday.
It will be the first meeting ever between them with an agenda fully set by First Nations.
Topics of discussion will include: clean drinking water legislation, child and family services reform, and making residential school denialism a hate crime.
They’ll also be advocating for Bill S-2, which looks to remove the Indian Act’s second generation cut-off rule.
That prevents children with two straight generations with a non-status parent from acquiring status themselves.
National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak says the ceremony will be rooted in the traditions of all Nations participating.
She calls it a pivotal moment, as representatives of a government that once banned First Nations celebrations will now be participating in one.
