The Portland Canal Marine Terminal in Stewart officially opened Wednesday, marking the unveiling of British Columbia’s first majority Indigenous-owned port.
The ceremony featured a blessing of the terminal by Nisg̱a’a and Tahltan Elders, along with a flag raising and official ribbon-cutting.
Premier David Eby attended and delivered remarks, along with Wade Grant, Parliamentary Secretary and MP for Vancouver Quadra. Leadership from the Nisg̱a’a Lisims Government, Tahltan Central Government, and Arrow Transportation also spoke, alongside senior mining executives, project partners, and invited guests.
The terminal is described as a key gateway for moving Canada’s critical minerals to global markets, and organizers say it’s part of an integrated mine-to-market transportation network meant to strengthen the country’s mineral supply chain. The opening comes as the terminal moves toward operational improvements ahead of future expansion investment.
Speakers included Eva Clayton, President of the Nisg̱a’a Lisims Government; Kerry Carlick, President of the Tahltan Central Government; Tim Bell, Executive Vice-President of Arrow Group of Companies; and Todd den Engelsen, CEO of the Tahltan Nation Development Corporation.
