Ksi Lisims LNG says a new long-term supply agreement with German energy company Uniper is a major milestone for the proposed LNG facility on Nisga’a Nation territory.
The agreement will see Uniper purchase two million tonnes of LNG annually for up to 20 years, with deliveries expected to begin in 2032.
Rebecca Scott, Senior Director of Communications and Community Relations with Western LNG, says the deal is significant because it is the first time Canadian LNG has been sold through a long-term agreement with a European utility.
“It’s the very first time that Canada’s LNG will be sold to a European utility,” Scott said. “It shows that Canada has a world-class natural gas resource. It is low emission, it’s Indigenous-led, it’s responsibly developed.”
Scott says the agreement brings Ksi Lisims LNG closer to a final investment decision, which would allow the project to move toward construction. She says the project has now secured buyers for about half of its future LNG capacity.
The project is expected to create thousands of construction jobs and hundreds of long-term operational and contracting opportunities in Northwest B.C.
“Every time we make an announcement like this, it gets us closer to getting those jobs and contracting opportunities in place,” Scott said.
Ksi Lisims LNG is being developed through a partnership between the Nisga’a Nation, Western LNG, and Rockies LNG. Scott says Nisga’a leadership has guided the project from the beginning.
The project is also designed to use hydroelectric power from BC Hydro’s grid, which Scott says will significantly reduce emissions compared with conventional LNG facilities.
A final investment decision is expected later this year, with construction targeted to begin in 2027 if the project moves forward.
