According to a new report by the Council of Canadian Academies, a community driven approach to policing could benefit Indigenous communities.
That report finds that in Indigenous communities face unique challenges that traditional policing does not adequately address.
An expert panel assembled for the report found that a relationship-based, community led, approach is the most promising way to tackle those issues.
“Toward Peace, Harmony, and Well-being: Policing in Indigenous Communities” also offers principles to apply to this method of policing.
Evidence in the report found that holistic views of community safety already exist in Indigenous communities.
The Council claims that their method of policing helps to preserve core community values.
